Gramvousa & Balos Lagoon
Gramvousa & Balos Lagoon
A tour to one of the breath-taking beaches of the world. Enjoy a day’s cruise from the port of Kissamos to island of Gramvousa and Balos Lagoon, sailing through a huge cave, that is believed to have been the ancient shipyard of “Tarsanas”. At the end of the Gulf you will notice an impressive geological phenomenon where, as a result of the passage of time, the western part of the island is rising, while the eastern part is sinking. This phenomenon was mainly created by catastrophic earthquakes that took place in 66 BC and 365 BC. According to scientific estimates, this geographical phenomenon still continues today, but at a much slower rate.
First stop will be Gramvousa, with its eminent castle that was built by the Venetians in 1579 at the highest point of the island, on top of a steep rock at a height of 137m. The panoramic view, its majesty and the legend of the pirate’s hidden treasure, will tempt you to visit it. Second stop; Balos Lagoon, where you will get to excel your summer tan at the amazing Lagoon, and relax on your way back to the hostel, with this all-day tour.
The Destination
How to get there:
By an organized tour, by Car, by public transportation.
The Organized Tour:
Full Day Tour, Bus ride & Cruise, 08.00 – 19.00
By Car:
The road is challenging, with a long part being dirt road and sharp cliffs. Often, due to traffic, it can be very tricky to reach Balos. Car rentals do not cover any damage accident in the area so unless you have your own fully insured car, it is suggested you use an organized tour instead.
By Public transportation:
You can take the local bus and book your trip with the cruise company directly. This is more expensive than booking an organized tour through the hostel (as we get bulk prices for group bookings) and it is quickly booked due to limited siting.

- Pick up from the hostel by bus
- Arrival at the port of Kissamos, where you pick up the boat to Gramvousa
